In the classroom, I dress in masquarade, give a review of Gothic fiction history and elements, talk about our essential questions and give a background on the black death and the Middle Ages. Students follow along with text as I read with flair, then discuss the mood, theme and word choices of the short story. One class really got into the story by mimicking the "deliberate and stately step" of the Red Death. We had lots of fun!
Ms. Craig helped with the setting by placing 'candles' about the room and creating a great effect with creating windows to match those in the seventh, westward room of the story. "The panes here were a dark scarlet - a deep blood color." Look for the story in the next Total Connection!
