"– that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." - Abraham Lincoln
"In ourselves alone lies the future of the German people if we guide the German people to their own diligence." -Adolph Hitler
" This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper." -Franklin D. Roosevelt
6th Grade students spent a week working on a collaborative Paideia seminar and speech evaluation unit. During the Paideia seminar, students broke into groups among their Language Arts teacher in the classroom and Mr. West and Ms. Dextre in the media center. They analyzed passages from FDR's inaugural address, making connections with events during that time period.
The following lesson in the media center consisted of watching powerful speeches:
- Maya Angleou's On the Pulse of the Morning at President Clinton's inauguration
- Adolf Hitler's address to the Reischtag as Chancellor
- Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address
Since Mr. Lincoln didn't live in an era of moving pictures, he (Mr. West) came back through time to deliver the speech in person! The students used a graphic organizer to make connections and analyze elements of the speeches. The students dug deep, producing some great responses and ideas.
